What's your favorite song with "America" or "USA" in the title? Bonus points if you share it with us.
This is "American Way", a song by my friend Mark Morrison's band, Fisher J. Price, about a thrift store in Lancaster called the American Way. It reminds me of good times in the Antelope Valley.
As it happens, I bought a couple of good shirts at the American Way just yesterday.
Unrelatedly, I am happy because I just had a nice customer service call with my bank and the woman who took my call was very helpful and nice and I got a couple of things sorted out that had been bothering me for a while. So yay for good customer service and yay for bank business being taken care of.
Also unrelatedly, I am sculpting a plesiosaur. I will use it to make a plesiosaur mold with which I will be able to make hundreds of little plesiosaurs in bronze or aluminum or gold or plastic or Nerf-style squishy foam or soap or chocolate or etc. Pretty cool.
What's making you smile today?
My portfolio review! It went extremely well! They really liked my art and gave me lots of compliments. Enthusiastic praise is hard to come by at this school, and receiving some today was really encouraging. They also gave me advice about moving forward and it was helpful to hear. I feel very good.
What tech gadget do you wish someone would just hurry up and invent already?
a machine that records your dreams, please and thank you.
Which cultural festivals will you be attending this summer?
None of them. School eats my life.
Sex and the City grossed $55.7 million dollars this weekend - the best
opening ever for an R-rated movie. What did you think of the movie? If
you didn't see it, do you plan to?
I did not see it and I do not plan to. I definitely won't pay to see it in theaters, anyway. If I get bored enough some day I might watch a bootleg of it online for the sake of morbid curiosity. Might. But probably won't.
What parenting tip do you swear by?
I'm no parent (thanks be to god), but I have one: do not force your kids (or anyone else's kids, or anyone) to eat foods that they hate.
What artist/band are you listening to the most right now? How did you discover him/her/them?
I'm listening to Hank Williams! I've heard his songs all my life, but I only recently looked up who he was and downloaded a bunch of his music. It's probably the single best thing I've ever done. (Because vox won't let me upload a song for some reason, I'm stickin in a video) check it:
What are the goofy nicknames you have for your pet? Bonus points for sharing a picture of him/her.

You are MEAN, Vox.
What's your favorite type of cheese? Or, if you don't like cheese, why not?
Submitted by Draegon Scribe.
This seems like a good opportunity to post this video I came across about how cheese is like heroin: (you can skip to about 8 minutes in for the part on cheese/dairy)
I think it's pretty worth watching all the way through. It's interesting and funny.
That said, I was never that big on cheese when I still ate it, but my then-favorite was definitely mozzarella.
This past year has been called "the worst year ever for U.S. airlines." What has your experience with the airlines been like when you've traveled in recent months?
It has? Why? I had no idea. I live in a bubble.
The last time I flew was when I took the tiny planes to Humboldt and back around Thanksgiving. And aside from me being late for one of my flights and having my seat sold out from under me* and having to coordinate a new flight + connection, all went swimmingly. Before that, I flew out to Illinois for a funeral and everything about the flights went totally smoothly. So basically I have no idea what you are talking about, vox.
*I was actually there about 15 minutes before my plane was to leave, but the airport rules say that if you aren't there 25 minutes before and it's an overbooked flight, they sell your ticket. So.
What is the worst date you've ever been on?
I've never been on an actual date... (at least, I don't think I have!). Is that weird? Dating is weird. I mean are people really still DATING these days? What's up with that?
Book, magazine, catalog, nutritional information, billboard, website, newspaper... What are you currently reading and would you recommend it to others?
Right now I am most of the way through The Urth of the New Sun by Gene Wolfe, and Heck Yes I would recommend it to others, as it is incredible. But I would first recommend that they read the 4-book series that precedes it (collectively titled The Book of the New Sun), which is magnificent. I don't know where to begin in trying to describe the books because there is just SO MUCH that goes on in them, so I will just say that it is a science fiction/fantasy epic "journey"/"quest" -type story set in the extremely distant future, when the sun is slowly dying out and Earth (now known as "Urth") is growing colder. It is all about universes and creatures and people and environments and societies and time and Saving The World.. and it is all written in subtle but mind-blowing plot twists and puzzles. The term "science fiction" carries some negative connotation, but these books don't deserve it. They are smart and lovely and wonderful. I recommend them very much, yes.
What movies have you seen that were better than the book?
Submitted by Referencegirl.
I've been thinking about this question, and I just don't think I've ever encountered one that was!
There are a handfull of bookmovies that, for whatever reason, I enjoy as much as (or nearly as much as) their book counterparts (examples: The Princess Bride, Perfume, A Clockwork Orange, Alice In Wonderland, James and the Giant Peach, and Fight Club [the book and movie are practically the same entity]) but I don't believe I've ever seen one that I definitely enjoyed more than the book. It's hard to compare, though, obviously. Maybe too hard to compare.
Hm. I still need to read the Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter books some time.
